What is Dub

Dub is an electronic music genre that was created from reggae between 1960 and 1970. Also regarded as a subgenre, the style consists of existing recording instrumental remixes done by removing the vocals, emphasizing the rhythm section and applying some studio effects such as echo and reverberation with instruments and vocals dropping in and out of the mix.

The removal of vocals and other instruments emphasizes the bass guitar. Sometimes, the music features other noises such as water flowing, birds singing, thunder and producers barking instructions to the musicians as the song flows.

Dub was first made by producers and recording engineers such as Errol Thompson, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Osbourne "King Tubby" Ruddock, to mention a few.

Many genres of music have been influenced by Dub including punk, rock, pop, hip hop, post-disco, house, and more recently techno, ambient, trip hop and electronic dance music. Also, Dub has become a base for the genres of bass, jungle and drum.

Dub music introduced a new era of creativity in reggae music and continues to evolve, waxing and waning in popularity as musical fashion continues to change.
